Let me restate this so the significance sinks in: Village Voice Media suspended publication of ALL its comic strip across its ENTIRE CHAIN of alternative weekly papers. For those who don't know, Village Voice Media owns fifteen papers in key cities like New York and LA and is a huge component of the alternative comic strip lifeblood. With roughly one hundred thirty alternative weekly papers in the USA, shutting out fifteen papers accounts for a drop in 12% of the print outlets alternative comic artists can see their work published. This is a huge blow to the alternative comics industry. In addition, across the board, the other 88% of papers have been cutting comics in hopes of staying afloat in the tough economic times. On top of the loss of these fifteen papers, a lot of the cartoonists who were syndicated by them have already, or soon will, lose outlets in the one hundred other non VVM-owned papers. Right now I'm doing some non Mr. Wiggles comic strips for a government agency (can't really talk about that project in detail right now though 'cuz it's hush hush) and art directing/designing a few high profile children's books. These are great, but what I'm really excited about at the moment is that I just signed on to be a character artist for the first few episodes of the upcoming animated show, Superjail on Adult Swim. This show is pretty fucked up in all the right ways. You can see clips of the pilot on Youtube here and here. I've never really done animation work before so I'm totally psyched to learn all about it and to work with Aaron Augenblick and the gang over at Augenblick Studios. And, like I said, the show is pretty awesome. I'll be starting at the end of the month. I can't wait! I actually really enjoyed it. In case you're not aware of it, Kid Nation is a reality show where forty kids live together in an abandoned frontier town for forty days and try to make their society work. Nobody is voted off at the end of each episode. Kid's leave whenever they feel like they've had enough and can't take it anymore. They look great, they feel great, and they're pretty fun to play with. All that, and they can even sustain human life. What else can you say that about? Call it a primal urge, aesthetic taste, or a confirmation of my heterosexuality, but I love being around them. Big boobs, small boobs, round boobs, pointy boobs--they're all pretty awesome. So, with that in mind, I'm all for helping them out and keeping them in existence. My friend, Laurie, is participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in October. This was a tough one to do since the published version is translated into Italian. At least until September anyway until school starts back up (Get it? Yeah, I know it's a bad joke.). I finished up the summer intensive that I was teaching and have been taking a much needed rest. Class was really great. I'm used to teaching one three hour session once a week and, to be honest, I had no idea how in the hell I was going to teach for five days a week, seven hours a day. But, luckily, it all worked out really well and I think the students all took something from the experience. And I didn't even have sex with any of them.
